The Great Pyramid

The Pharaoh Khufu began planning for his pyramid when he took the throne. The spot that was picked for his pyramid was on the  west bank of the nile. Khufu's architects knew the importance of building the pharaoh's pyramid so that its sides faced north, south, east and west. They planned on building the largest one ever built in ancient Egypt. Large blocks of stone were cut from quarries nearby. The large blocks were dragged across the desert to the site of the pyramid.Workers were mostly composed of farmers. The workers built ramps of mudbrick, limestone chips, and clay. They dragged large stones up the ramps to build the next level. The work on the pyramid continued for the next 20 yrs.

A special block covered in shiny metal was placed at the top of the pyramid. Blocks of white limestone covered the pyramid. Each stone weighs about 2.5 tons to 15 tons each. The pyramid itself has three burial chambers. The second chamber was aboveground, the first was underground, and the third is the King's chamber. This great pyramid was a center piece of a much larger complex. This complex had 3 small pyramids, a mortuary temple, valley temple, and much more.
