Yu the Great

Yu the Great was born during the year of the tiger 2059 BCE. He was the legendary founder of the Xia dynasty and best known for taming the great flood that occurred in China.People were forced to abandon their homes to go live in the mountains. The flood brought much misery to the people.Yu had the task of fighting this natural disaster. After being married for only four days he left home to control the flood. He found a way of digging channels to allow the  flood water to flow to the sea.The flood water flowed into the sea through nine newly dredged rivers.It took him 13 years to control the floodwater.

 During that 13 years he passed by his home 3 times but never went in until he accomplished his task.He became the personification of selfless devotion and perseverance. He also organized people to develop agriculture by fully utilizing water and soil. The ruler at the time was chosen according to ability. He was recommended by Shun and the people to be the next ruler. People respected him for being selfless  in order to help others. He was given the title Yu the Great after he successfully tamed the floodwater. The Xia Dynasty he established was the first dynasty of China and lasted 400 years.
