Oda Nobunaga

Oda Nobunaga was born on June 23,1534 and died June 21,1582. He is perhaps more famous for how he died than what he accomplished. He was the first of the three unifiers of Japan. First we are going to focus on what he did for Japan.  He was liked and loathed by people in Japan.  Well unlike his predecessors, he selected his subjects on the basis of their skills and not their social standing.  During his period he revolutionized the way war was fought. At the time he had one of the most modernized forces in the world.  Nobunaga implemented the use of long pikes, firearms, and castle fortifications. His retainers also were given land based on rice output. His brilliance was not just limited to the military.

Nobunaga was also a very clever and smart businessman.  He really modernized Japan's economy by building castle towns and making them the center of local economies. Nobunaga did this in order to move Japan's economy from an agricultural base to manufacture and service base. He also built roads in order to move armies and to trade. Nobunaga also traded on an international level as well. He established laws to ease and regulate borrowing of debt. Oda Nobunaga mercilessly killed thousands of people in order to unify and conquer Japan. While he was at a temple in Kyoto one of his generals attacked him. This resulted in a battle and the battle ended  with Nobunaga committing suicide. The unification of Japan was a result of his achievements during his life.
